Amasya’s accommodation choice is clear: stay on or near the riverfront in the Pontic tombs district, in an Ottoman house or a property with a direct river view. The north bank (below the cliff and tombs) has the most atmospheric accommodation — the tombs visible above, the river outside the window, the Ottoman houses flanking the building. The south bank has river-view properties with the best compositional views of the north bank houses and cliff.
North bank (below the Pontic tombs)
The north bank of the Yeşilırmak, directly below the cliff face with the Pontic tombs, is the most dramatically positioned accommodation zone in Amasya. Hotels and konak guesthouses here are within the scene — the tombs are visible from upper-floor windows; the river is immediately outside.
Character: The most historically immersive accommodation in Amasya — the Ottoman houses, the cliff, the tombs, and the river all within 100 metres.
Price range: ₺800–3,000/night for boutique konaks and converted houses.
Practical considerations:
- Room position: Ask specifically for a room facing the river (nehir manzaralı) or with a view toward the cliff/tombs. Ground-floor rooms facing the street or interior courtyard are less desirable.
- Noise: The riverfront can have café and restaurant noise until midnight in summer — lighter sleepers should consider ear plugs or rooms on upper floors.
- Parking: Limited in the old city; use public parking at the valley entrance.
South bank — river-view properties
The south bank has properties facing north across the river toward the Ottoman houses and cliff — these provide the classic Amasya view (the houses reflected in the water, the tombs above) rather than the view from within the historic district.
Character: More open positioning; the view north across the river is the primary asset.
Price range: ₺700–2,500/night.
The view trade-off: North bank accommodation places you within the heritage scene; south bank accommodation gives you the best view of it. Both are valid choices depending on what you are optimising for.
General city area
Further from the riverfront — toward the otogar and the modern parts of the city — standard 2–3 star hotels serve the business and domestic tourism market.
Price range: ₺400–900/night.
Best for: Budget travellers; those arriving late or leaving early (proximity to the bus terminal); visitors who plan to spend most of their time out of the room.
Consideration: Amasya is small enough that a 10–15 minute walk brings you from the general city hotels to the riverfront. The loss of atmosphere is real but the access is manageable.
What makes a good Amasya hotel
River views: The defining premium — any property that can offer direct Yeşilırmak views is worth the supplement. The reflection of the Ottoman houses in the river at dawn and dusk is the primary visual experience of Amasya; being close to it (rather than 10 minutes’ walk away) changes the experience.
Breakfast: The best properties serve a regional Black Sea–adjacent breakfast: local Amasya apples (in season), fresh bread, local honey, regional cheeses, and eggs. An Amasya breakfast that doesn’t include the local apple is missing the point.
Proximity to tombs path: The path to the Pontic tombs starts from the north bank riverfront. Staying on the north bank means a 5-minute walk to the tomb path; staying elsewhere means 15–20 minutes before you reach the trailhead.
Seasonal notes
Apple harvest (September–October): The most popular domestic tourism period — the valley fills with day-trippers from Ankara and Samsun. Accommodation in the riverfront zone books 2–3 weeks ahead for weekends; midweek is more available.
Spring blossom (April–May): A second popular period; the valley orchards in bloom are a significant draw. Similar booking dynamics to harvest season.
July–August: Hot and busy; the light-show season at the tombs draws evening visitors; riverfront restaurants at their liveliest.
Winter: Very quiet; the best prices of the year; the valley atmosphere (possible morning mist on the river, winter light on the cliff) is compelling for those who travel off-season.
