Marmaris gets characterised as a nightlife destination, which undersells it. The natural setting — a deep bay enclosed by pine-forested mountains — is genuinely beautiful, and the range of activities extends well beyond Bar Street: a well-preserved Ottoman castle, boat trips through the bay and to offshore islands, ferries to Rhodes, and the Datça Peninsula running 70km southwest through one of Turkey’s least-developed coastal landscapes.

Marmaris Castle (Marmaris Kalesi)
Entry: ₺100 Location: Headland above the old town; 10-minute walk from the marina Hours: Daily 9am–7pm (reduced in winter)
Built by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1522 as a base for his siege of Rhodes (which succeeded — the Knights of St. John surrendered Rhodes that year), Marmaris Castle is a compact but well-preserved Ottoman fortification. The small museum inside displays amphora and underwater finds from the bay. The view from the battlements over the Marmaris Bay is the primary reason to visit — the enclosed bay, the forested mountains, the yacht-filled marina laid out below.
The old town around the castle: The streets below the castle (the Kale Mahallesi — Castle Quarter) are the most atmospheric part of Marmaris — covered bazaar streets with silver jewellery workshops, leather goods, and spice sellers. Less authentic than it was 20 years ago (overtly tourist-oriented) but still the best walking in the town.
Allow: 1.5–2 hours for the castle and surrounding streets.
Bar Street (Barlar Sokağı)
Marmaris’s most famous feature — and either the reason you came or the reason you booked a hotel at the far end of the bay from it. A 250m pedestrian alley of back-to-back bars and clubs operating from approximately 11pm until dawn in peak season (June–August). The music is loud, the drinks are (for Turkey) expensive, and the crowd is overwhelmingly northern European tourists in their 20s–30s.
If this is your scene: Arrive after midnight for peak atmosphere. Most clubs have cover charges ₺100–200 or minimum spends.
If this is not your scene: The Içmeler and Turunc areas are quieter bases; Marmaris town itself has pleasant marina-side evenings that feel nothing like Bar Street.
Boat trips from Marmaris marina
Full-day bay tour: The standard Marmaris boat trip visits the bay’s coves, islands, and swimming spots — 8 hours, lunch included, 4–6 swimming stops. ₺250–400/person. Departs 10am from the marina.
Phosphorescent Bay (Fosforlu Koyu): A night boat trip (9pm–midnight approximately) to the bay where bioluminescent plankton illuminate the water — most visible when disturbed by swimming. A genuinely extraordinary experience. ₺200–300/person.
Datça gulet cruise: A 3-day gulet cruise to the Datça Peninsula and Knidos, returning via Bozburun and various island anchorages. One of the classic Turkish Blue Voyage routes. Shared berth: ₺2,500–4,000/person. Private gulet: ₺15,000–25,000 for the whole boat.
Rhodes, Greece (ferry)
Travel: 50-minute fast ferry; daily service in season (May–October). ₺600–1,000 return from Marmaris harbour. Visa requirement: EU/EEA, UK, US, Australian citizens — passport required, no visa for short visits.
One of Turkey’s best day trips. Rhodes has a UNESCO World Heritage medieval city (the old town with the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Street of the Knights, and the Byzantine city walls is exceptional — 3–4 hours minimum to walk properly), excellent beaches on the west and east coast, and a good range of restaurants.
Day trip logistics: Morning ferry (9–10am); explore the old town; lunch at the Grand Masters area; beach afternoon; evening ferry back. Buy tickets in advance at the Marmaris harbour ticket offices.
Atatürk Caddesi and the waterfront
The main waterfront promenade — lined with tourist restaurants, bars, and the inevitable gift shops — is pleasant for an evening walk despite (or because of) its commercialism. The marina end is more yacht-oriented and quieter; the castle end has the most atmospheric views.
Best time: Early evening (6–8pm) when the light on the mountains is good and the day-tripping boats are returning to the marina.
Datça Peninsula day trip
Distance: 70km southwest of Marmaris Access: Bus from Marmaris otogar to Datça town (2 hours, ₺80); or boat from Marmaris marina (2.5 hours by gulet/day boat, ₺300–400/person)
The Datça Peninsula — a long, thin arm of land extending into the Aegean — is completely different from Marmaris in character: quiet, undeveloped, with excellent bays and the ancient city of Knidos at the tip.
Knidos: The ancient Carian and Greek city at the peninsula’s tip — ruins including a circular harbour, agora, theatre, and the original setting of the most famous statue in the ancient world (the Praxiteles Aphrodite, now lost). Access by boat from Datça (2 hours) or the end of the peninsula road. Boat trip from Marmaris to Knidos: ₺400–600/person (full day). Entry to the site: ₺100.
Scuba diving
Marmaris bay and the surrounding waters offer decent diving — not at the level of Kaş, but with caves, walls, and a few wreck sites. Multiple operators in the marina area. 2-tank dive: ₺400–600/person.
Içmeler and Turunc
The closest alternative towns:
- Içmeler (8km west): Quieter beach resort, good sandy beach, lower prices than Marmaris town. Minibus ₺15.
- Turunc (15km south): Small village, quieter atmosphere, accessible by sea taxi from Marmaris (₺60) or a mountain road. Good for escaping the town crowd.
What to avoid
The boat-trip touts at the marina entrance — book through your hotel or at the official marina ticket offices for verified operators. The promenade restaurants directly facing the water have tourist pricing (₺400–700/person); the streets behind them are 30–40% cheaper for equivalent food.
