Istanbul to Cappadocia: All the Ways to Get There
Cappadocia is one of Turkey’s most popular destinations, and most visitors travel from Istanbul. The options are flight (fastest and easiest), overnight bus (cheapest), or a combination.
By Plane (Recommended)
The fastest and most practical option. Flights from Istanbul (both IST and SAW airports) to Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV) take about 90 minutes.
Kayseri Airport (ASR): Higher flight frequency, served by Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, and others. About 75 minutes by shuttle from Göreme. Slightly more driving time but better flight options.
Nevşehir Airport (NAV): Closer to Göreme (around 45 minutes), but fewer daily flights. Check options for your travel dates — Nevşehir can be significantly more convenient if there’s a suitable flight.
Booking: Pegasus and Turkish Airlines both serve this route regularly. Book 3–6 weeks ahead for the best prices; Cappadocia’s popularity means fares rise quickly as dates approach. Budget around €60–120 return if booking reasonably early.
Airport transfer: Most Cappadocia hotels can arrange airport pickups (typically €25–40 from Kayseri, less from Nevşehir). Havaş runs shared shuttle buses from Kayseri. Private taxis are also available.
By Overnight Bus
The budget option — and not as uncomfortable as it sounds. Turkish intercity buses (Kamil Koç, Metro Turizm, Pamukkale) are significantly more comfortable than their European equivalents: reclining seats, on-board attendants serving drinks and snacks, and regular stops.
The journey from Istanbul’s Esenler otogar (bus terminal) to Göreme or Nevşehir takes 10–12 hours overnight. Depart around 8–10pm, arrive around 7–9am. A bus seat costs around 400–600 TRY (approximately €12–18 at current rates).
The bus drops you at Nevşehir otogar, from where local dolmuş (minibuses) or taxis take you the remaining distance to Göreme.
Who it suits: Budget travellers who want to save accommodation costs for one night. Less suitable for those with connecting flight commitments or tight schedules.
By Train (Partial)
There is no direct train from Istanbul to Cappadocia. A high-speed train runs from Istanbul (Pendik) to Konya (about 4 hours), from where a bus to Cappadocia takes a further 3 hours — total around 7–8 hours with connections. This is not faster than the bus and involves more logistics, so it’s rarely the first choice.
Practical Tips
- If flying, arrive at Kayseri or Nevşehir with enough time for your hotel transfer before any planned evening activities
- Most Göreme hotels offer half-day tours to the valley sites on the afternoon of your arrival — check with your hotel in advance
- Hot air balloon flights take off very early (typically 5–6am) — plan your travel so you’re rested and in Cappadocia the evening before your balloon date

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is it better to fly or take the bus from Istanbul to Cappadocia?
- For most travellers, the flight is better — 90 minutes versus 10–12 hours. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus fly cheaply (often €40–80 return if booked ahead). The overnight bus is an option for budget travellers who don't want to pay for an extra night's accommodation.
- Which airport do you fly into for Cappadocia?
- Kayseri Airport (ASR) is slightly further from Göreme (about 75 minutes by shuttle) but has more flight frequency. Nevşehir Airport (NAV) is closer (45 minutes) but has fewer flights. Both are served by Turkish Airlines and Pegasus from Istanbul.
- How do I get from the airport to Göreme in Cappadocia?
- Airport transfer shuttles (Havaş or private operators) run from both Kayseri and Nevşehir airports to Göreme and other Cappadocia villages. Book in advance or arrange with your hotel. Private taxis are also available at both airports.
