Bodrum accommodation divides between the town itself and the Peninsula villages — and within the town, between the bazaar-area pensions and the boutiques near the harbour. The Peninsula villages each serve a distinct market: Gümbet for package tourism and water sports, Yalıkavak for upscale yacht crowd, Türkbükü for the ultra-expensive luxury scene. Choosing where to stay determines your experience of Bodrum more than almost any other decision.

Bodrum town: harbour and bazaar
Best for: First-time visitors, access to the castle and museum, day trips to Peninsula villages Worst for: Sandy beach access, budget travellers, those wanting nightlife quiet
Bodrum town is the most practical base for visitors who want to explore the Peninsula and access the historical sites. The castle, Museum of Underwater Archaeology, Mausoleum ruins, bazaar, harbour restaurants, and ferry connections to Greece are all walkable.
Accommodation types:
- Pensions and small guesthouses in the bazaar area: ₺600–1,200/night, basic but in the most authentic part of town
- Boutique hotels near the harbour: ₺1,500–4,000/night, restored traditional houses with courtyards
- Harbour-facing hotels: ₺2,500–6,000+/night; views come with a significant premium
The bazaar neighbourhood: The area behind the western harbour (around Atatürk Caddesi and the covered bazaar streets) has the most honest prices and the most local character. Walking distance from the harbour; no beach.
Gümbet (5km, 10 minutes by dolmuş)
Best for: Sandy beach on foot, water sports, nightlife access, package tourism Worst for: Atmosphere, quiet, authentic Turkish experience
Gümbet is the package tourism hub of the Peninsula — a 1.5km sandy beach lined with mid-range hotels, beach clubs, bars, and water sports operators. Not beautiful, but genuinely functional for a beach holiday with affordable access to the sea.
Price range: ₺800–2,500/night for 3–4 star beach hotels. All-inclusive packages from ₺1,500–3,500 per person per night.
Who stays here: British, German, and Scandinavian package tourists; young groups wanting beach + nightlife; families wanting the sandy beach.
Bitez (8km, 15 minutes by dolmuş)
Best for: Windsurfers, kitesurfers, quieter beach access Worst for: Nightlife, sandy beach (the bay is partly gravel)
Bitez is a step up from Gümbet in calm and quality — the bay is sheltered, the beach is partly sandy and partly gravel, and the fish restaurants behind the beach are better than anything in Gümbet. The accommodation is mostly small boutique properties and apartments rather than large hotels.
Price range: ₺700–2,000/night for pension and boutique accommodation.
Yalıkavak (35km, 40 minutes by dolmuş)
Best for: Upscale travellers wanting a more authentic village alongside luxury, yacht crowd, the Thursday market Worst for: Budget travellers, nightlife, sandy beach
Yalıkavak has undergone significant upscaling over the past decade — the Palmarina superyacht marina brought a wealthier clientele and the village adapted, but it hasn’t entirely lost its character. The Thursday bazaar remains excellent; the fish restaurants by the harbour are some of the best on the Peninsula.
Accommodation: A mix of smaller boutique hotels (₺1,500–3,500/night) and larger upscale properties (₺3,500–8,000+/night). Monthly apartment rentals in Yalıkavak are significantly more expensive than Bodrum town.
Türkbükü (45km, 45 minutes by dolmuş)
Best for: Ultra-luxury, maximum exclusivity, the most expensive beach clubs in Turkey Worst for: Budget travellers, anyone who finds conspicuous luxury uncomfortable
Türkbükü is for those who want the most exclusive version of the Turkish Riviera. The boutique hotels here are genuinely luxurious; the beach clubs are genuinely expensive; the atmosphere is unambiguously high-end. This is Turkey’s answer to Portofino or St. Tropez.
Accommodation: Boutique luxury hotels ₺4,000–15,000+/night. Many properties require minimum stays in July–August (5–7 nights). Some are invitation-only or operate as effectively private clubs.
Göltürkbükü (adjacent to Türkbükü)
The calmer, slightly less expensive sister village to Türkbükü — a double bay, slightly more sheltered and fractionally less fashionable. Same general upscale character at 10–20% lower prices. The calmer water makes it better for swimming.
Torba (10km from Bodrum town)
A quieter village north of Bodrum town with a good beach and calmer atmosphere than Gümbet. Several decent mid-range hotels and pensions (₺800–2,000/night). A 15-minute dolmuş from the Bodrum centre.
Best for: Those wanting beach access closer to the town without the Gümbet scene.

Booking advice
Peak summer (July–August): Book Bodrum town boutiques and Yalıkavak/Türkbükü properties 8–16 weeks in advance. Gümbet hotels have more inventory but prices still rise significantly at peak.
Shoulder season (May, June, September, October): Excellent value — 30–50% below peak rates across all areas. October is the best month for price-to-quality: warm enough to swim, uncrowded, and the Peninsula returns to local life.
Self-catering: Apartment rentals via Sahibinden (Turkish-language) are significantly cheaper than hotels for 1+ week stays, particularly in Gümbet and Bitez.
