Edirne is a small city and the accommodation geography is simple: the centre, near the Ottoman monuments, is where most visitors stay. There is no sprawling tourist resort zone — Edirne is a historic city visited for its architecture, and the hotels cluster accordingly.
City centre — the main option
The streets around the Selimiye Mosque and the covered bazaar contain the majority of Edirne’s hotels — from budget pensions to mid-range business hotels. Walking distance from all the main monuments: the Selimiye is 5–10 minutes from most city-centre hotels; the Eski Cami and Üç Şerefeli are within the same radius.
Character: The city centre is quiet by Turkish city standards — Edirne is not an industrial city, the traffic is lighter than Bursa or Ankara, and the historic core has been substantially pedestrianised around the mosque area. Evening activity on the main Saraçlar Caddesi pedestrian street is modest but pleasant.
Accommodation range: ₺500–3,000/night from budget to mid-range business hotels.
Best for: All visitors; first-time to Edirne; anyone primarily visiting the mosques.
Saraçlar Caddesi (pedestrian main street)
The main shopping and pedestrian street connects the Selimiye area to the city’s commercial centre. Hotels on or immediately off this street are the most centrally located.
Near the university
Trakya University (40,000+ students) anchors a student district on the city’s eastern side. Budget accommodation here is cheaper than the city centre; the café and restaurant options for students drive some service quality. 15–20 minutes walk from the main monuments.
Sarayiçi (Tunca island) area
The island in the Tunca River where the palace ruins and Kırkpınar wrestling field are located is 2km from the centre — there is limited accommodation nearby, but the riverside setting is attractive if you’re driving.
Kırkpınar accommodation
If visiting during the oil wrestling festival (June–July), Edirne’s accommodation fills completely. The city has approximately 3,000 hotel beds — adequate for normal tourist volumes but grossly insufficient for the festival crowds.
Booking requirement: Book 2–3 months ahead for Kırkpınar. Expect all categories to be fully booked by May; prices increase 50–100% during the festival week.
Alternative: Stay in Tekirdağ (65km east) or Lüleburgaz (70km east) and commute to Edirne for the festival days.
Neighbourhood comparison
| Area | Price range | Distance to Selimiye | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| City centre | ₺500–3,000 | 5–15 min walk | Most visitors |
| Near university | ₺400–1,200 | 20–25 min walk | Budget |
| Saraçlar Caddesi | ₺700–2,500 | 5 min walk | Central convenience |
Practical notes
Istanbul day-trip alternative: At 235km from Istanbul (3.5–4 hours by bus), Edirne is theoretically doable as a very long Istanbul day trip — but the bus journey eats the day. An overnight stay is strongly recommended.
Border proximity: Edirne’s proximity to the Greek and Bulgarian borders (8km and 18km respectively) makes it a natural stopping point for cross-border travellers. If arriving from or departing to Greece or Bulgaria, the central city-centre hotels are convenient.
Parking: Edirne is small and drivable; most hotels have parking or access to nearby parking. The historic centre has some traffic restrictions.
