İzmir itself is a city on the bay — the urban waterfront is a promenade rather than a swimming beach. For actual beach access, İzmir residents and visitors head to the Çeşme Peninsula (80km west) or the smaller coastal settlements north and south of the city. The Aegean beaches here are genuinely good — clear, blue, sandy — and the Çeşme Peninsula is internationally known for its windsurfing conditions.
The beach day-trip culture from İzmir is strong: the İZBAN suburban railway reaches Çeşme, and the road network means İzmir residents can be on a good beach within 1–1.5 hours.
İnciralti (urban beach)
İnciralti is İzmir’s closest beach — on the southern shore of the bay, 15km south of the city centre. It’s an urban beach rather than a resort beach: organised sunbeds and umbrellas, basic facilities, but accessible without a long journey.
Character: A functioning beach with İzmir families in summer. Not pristine; the bay water is marginally less clear than the open Aegean. Good for a quick beach morning without the journey to Çeşme.
Transport: Bus from İzmir city centre (30–40 minutes).
Cost: Sunbeds ₺80–150 for two.
Çeşme Peninsula beaches
The Çeşme Peninsula extends 40km west of İzmir into the open Aegean. The beaches here are significantly better than İnciralti — clearer water, better sand, and less urban context.
Çeşme town beach
The beach below Çeşme town (Çeşme Plajı) is a functional sandy beach with clear water. Developed but not overwhelming. A short walk from the castle and town centre.
Transport: İZBAN train or bus from İzmir (1 hour, ₺30–50 one-way).
Sunbeds: ₺100–200 for two.
Altınkum (Golden Sand)
Altınkum is the most popular sandy beach on the Çeşme Peninsula — broad, fine-sand, clear water. 5km from Çeşme town.
Character: The widest sand beach on the peninsula; significant tourist infrastructure in summer.
Transport: Dolmuş from Çeşme town.
Sunbeds: ₺120–200 for two.
Pırlanta Beach
Pırlanta (“Diamond”) Beach on the southern side of the peninsula — one of the clearest water beaches near İzmir. Rocky entry on sections; sandy on others.
Character: Less developed than Altınkum; the southern exposure means it faces open Aegean.
Transport: Requires car or taxi from Çeşme (₺40–80).
Alaçatı kite beach (Alaçatı Rüzgar Sörfü Plajı)
Alaçatı bay, on the south side of the peninsula near the town of Alaçatı, is Turkey’s premier windsurfing and kitesurfing location — consistent meltemi winds in summer make conditions ideal. The beach itself is sandy and the bay shallow, but the primary visitor is the water sports community.
Windsurfing hire: ₺600–1,200/day equipment. Lessons ₺800–1,500/3-hour session.
Kitesurfing: ₺800–1,500/day equipment. Lessons ₺1,000–2,000.
Transport: Bus from İzmir to Alaçatı (1 hour); or train to Çeşme and dolmuş.
Best season: June–September for the meltemi wind conditions.
Foça
Foça (ancient Phocaea) is 70km north of İzmir — a small fishing town on a rocky peninsula with several coves and a good swimming reputation. The clear water and the absence of a large sandy beach keep Foça less developed than Çeşme.
Character: A genuine small town with a functioning fishing harbour, several good seafood restaurants, and a community of weekend İzmir residents with holiday houses. Less touristified than Çeşme.
Beaches: Several rocky coves with clear water around the peninsula. The main town beach (Büyük Deniz — Great Sea) is sandy.
Monk seals: The Foça coast is one of the few remaining habitats of the Mediterranean monk seal (Akdeniz fokunyon) — a critically endangered species. Sightings are possible but not guaranteed.
Transport: Bus from İzmir Otogar (1 hour, ₺40–60).
Mordoğan and Karaburun Peninsula
The Karaburun Peninsula north of İzmir (between the İzmir Gulf and the open Aegean) has several remote coves accessible by boat or rough tracks — some of the clearest water near İzmir, with minimal development.
Access: Car (60–90 minutes from İzmir city centre) or occasional bus to Karaburun town. Most coves require boat access.
Character: Undeveloped, wild, the antithesis of the Çeşme resort experience. Good for those who want isolation and clear water without infrastructure.
Seferihisar / Sığacık
Seferihisar is 45km south of İzmir — a small, attractive coastal town that has developed a distinctive character as a “cittaslow” (slow food/slow living) movement town. The nearby Sığacık harbour has a small castle and a cluster of good seafood restaurants.
Character: More sedate and local-feeling than Çeşme. The town market (Saturday) is excellent.
Beach: Teos ancient site beach (near the ruins of the ancient city of Teos) — a long sandy beach with the ruins visible in the background. Quieter than Çeşme beaches.
Transport: Bus from İzmir (45 minutes, ₺25–40).

Practical information
Swimming season: The Aegean water near İzmir is swimmable from May through October. Peak temperature (25–27°C) in August. The Çeşme Peninsula open-Aegean beaches are cooler than the İzmir Gulf.
Meltemi wind: The summer meltemi (north wind) is consistent June–September. It keeps temperatures pleasant but can make the sea choppy on exposed northern-facing beaches. Alaçatı bay is sheltered from the direct meltemi — hence the windsurfing conditions.
Day trip logistics: The İZBAN train to Çeşme is the most convenient connection. For the northern beaches (Foça, Karaburun), car hire from İzmir is more practical.
