İzmir is the best-connected city on the Aegean coast for day trips — the surrounding region contains some of Turkey’s most significant ancient sites (Ephesus, Pergamon, Sardis), the most fashionable resort town (Alaçatı), some of the clearest water (Foça, Karaburun), and a ferry to Greece (Çeşme to Chios). Few cities in Turkey offer this range within a day’s reach.

South of İzmir
Selçuk and Ephesus (75km south)
Selçuk is the small town adjacent to the Ephesus ruins — an easy 75km from İzmir by TCDD train (75 minutes from Basmane station, ₺30–50 one-way; several departures daily).
Ephesus (Efes): Turkey’s most visited ancient site and one of the best-preserved Hellenistic and Roman cities in the Mediterranean. The marble-paved Kuretes Way, the Library of Celsus, the 25,000-seat Great Theatre, the Terrace Houses with their extraordinary mosaic floors and frescoes, the commercial Agora, and the Marble Street are all within the main site.
Entry: ₺750 for the main site; ₺400 additional for the Terrace Houses. Open daily (check seasonal hours).
Ephesus Museum (Selçuk): ₺100 — the finds from the excavations including the famous Artemis statues, a remarkable Roman sculptural collection, and good interpretation of daily life at Ephesus.
Temple of Artemis: One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — only one column remains standing from what was once the largest building in the ancient world. A single surviving column 2km from the main site; poignant rather than spectacular. Entry: free.
Selçuk town: A pleasant small town with several good restaurants and the market (Wednesday market is the largest) — worth a longer visit beyond the ruins.
Seferihisar / Sığacık (45km south)
Seferihisar is Turkey’s first “cittaslow” (slow city) — a town that has adopted the slow-food and slow-living philosophy and built a reputation for quality local produce and a relaxed pace. The nearby harbour town of Sığacık has a Genoese castle, a small marina, and several excellent seafood restaurants.
Sığacık harbour: One of the most atmospheric small harbours on the Aegean coast — a small fortified town with fishing boats, cats, and restaurants at the water’s edge.
Teos ancient site: 5km from Sığacık — ruins of the ancient city of Teos with a long sandy beach alongside. Free entry.
Seferihisar Saturday market: One of the best local produce markets near İzmir — farmers selling directly, good olive oil, local produce.
Transport: Bus from İzmir (45 minutes, ₺25–40).
Kuşadası (90km south)
Kuşadası is a major tourist port town 90km south of İzmir — primarily known as a cruise ship call point and the embarkation town for Ephesus. Less interesting as a destination than Selçuk or Sığacık, but has good beaches (Kadınlar Denizi, Güvercin Adası) and direct ferry service to the Greek island of Samos.
Ferry to Samos: Year-round (peak season more frequent). ₺600–900 return.
Transport from İzmir: Bus from İzmir Otogar (1.5 hours, ₺50–80).
North of İzmir
Foça (70km north)
Foça is the site of ancient Phocaea — the city whose people famously sailed west to found Marseille (Massalia) in 600 BCE. The modern town is a fishing town with a different character from the resort towns to the south: lower tourist infrastructure, clearer water, a working harbour.
What to see: The two ancient harbours (Little Sea and Great Sea), the Ottoman castle above the town, the Byzantine ruins at nearby Eski Foça (Old Foça, 5km south).
Mediterranean monk seals: The Foça coast is a protected zone for the Mediterranean monk seal — one of the world’s rarest marine mammals. Sightings are possible but not guaranteed.
Restaurants: Foça has good seafood restaurants on the harbour — several have been operating for decades, serving the local and İzmir visitor population.
Transport: Bus from İzmir Otogar (1 hour, ₺40–60).
Bergama/Pergamon (100km north)
Bergama is one of Turkey’s most significant ancient sites — the acropolis of the ancient Pergamon kingdom, perched dramatically above the modern town. The Pergamon Acropolis, Asclepion healing sanctuary, and the Bergama Museum make this a full-day visit.
Entry: Acropolis ₺500; cable car ₺120 return; Asclepion ₺200; museum ₺100.
What to see:
- Acropolis: Pergamon Theatre (one of the steepest ancient theatres), Altar of Zeus site (the altar itself is in Berlin — the foundation and context remain), Library site, royal palaces.
- Asclepion: The ancient medical sanctuary where Galen practised — sacred pools, sleeping halls, a tunnel used for psychological treatment.
Transport from İzmir: Bus from İzmir Otogar to Bergama (1.5 hours, ₺80–120; frequent service).
West of İzmir
Çeşme and Alaçatı (80km west)
Çeşme Peninsula is İzmir’s primary weekend and summer destination — the Çeşme to Alaçatı strip is the most fashionable coastal destination in western Turkey outside Istanbul’s summer circuit.
Alaçatı: A boutique town with whitewashed stone buildings (the Greek village architecture, preserved and repurposed), high-end restaurants, wine bars, and a fashion-forward clientele. Also the base for Turkey’s best windsurfing conditions.
Çeşme town: The peninsula’s main port — a Genoese castle, a ferry to Chios, and several good beaches nearby.
Chios ferry from Çeşme: The Greek island of Chios is 45 minutes from Çeşme by ferry — ₺500–800 return. Day trips possible; overnight allows more of the island (Pyrgi village, mastic trails, Nea Moni monastery).
Transport from İzmir: İZBAN suburban train to Çeşme (1 hour, ₺30–50); or bus.
East of İzmir
Sardis (90km east)
Sardis was the capital of the ancient Lydian Kingdom — Croesus’s city, the source of the expression “rich as Croesus.” The ruins include the Temple of Artemis (two surviving Ionic columns among the Lydian and Roman remains) and the extraordinary Roman gymnasium/bath complex (the most impressive such complex remaining in Turkey).
Entry: ₺200 (temple); ₺150 (gymnasium complex). Combined ticket available.
Transport from İzmir: Bus from İzmir Otogar to Salihli (1.5 hours, ₺60–80); taxi to the ruins from Salihli station.
