Kaş’s beaches are characteristically Lycian coast — shingle and pebble rather than sand, but with turquoise water clarity that compensates comprehensively. The town has two small beaches within walking distance; the spectacular beaches are slightly further, particularly Kaputaş (30km west, between cliffs), and the boat-accessible coves around the Kaş Peninsula.

Town beaches

Küçük Çakıl (Small Pebble Beach)

Type: Small pebble cove Entry: Free public section; beach club ₺150–250 Distance from centre: 10 minutes walk west of the harbour

The smaller and more sheltered of the two town beaches — a pebble cove with very clear water (the anchorage position is excellent for visibility). Beach club on one side with sunbeds and a bar; free public section on the other. Good for swimming; not for sunbathing if you prefer sand. The view toward the Greek island of Kastellorizo is constant.

Water quality: Excellent. The combination of depth immediately offshore and the bay’s position creates consistent clarity. One of the best swimming coves in the town.

Büyük Çakıl (Large Pebble Beach)

Type: Larger pebble beach Entry: Free public sections; beach clubs ₺200–350 Distance from centre: 15 minutes walk east

The main Kaş beach — a longer pebble strand with more beach clubs and facilities. The pebble is coarser here than at Küçük Çakıl; the water is equally clear. Water sports available from the beach club section (pedalo, kayak hire, snorkelling equipment).

Best time: Early morning (before 10am) for uncrowded swimming. The beach is manageable in peak season; arrival time determines experience.

Kaputaş Beach (30km west)

Type: Sand and pebble, between cliffs Entry: Free Transport: Dolmuş toward Fethiye, ask to be dropped at Kaputaş; ₺20 (30 minutes). Or taxi ₺120 return. Quality rating: ★★★★★

Kaputaş is the most dramatic beach near Kaş — and one of the most dramatic on the entire Turquoise Coast. The beach occupies a narrow canyon where the mountains meet the sea: sheer cliffs on both sides, turquoise water between them, accessed by a steep staircase (400+ steps) from the road above. The approach is spectacular and slightly vertiginous; the beach itself is sheltered, sandy-pebble, and outstanding.

Practical: No facilities at beach level other than a seasonal bar. Carry water and food. The steps require reasonable fitness. Arrive before 10am or after 4pm in peak season — the beach is small and fills rapidly.

Combined with Kalkan: The drive from Kaş to Kaputaş (30 minutes) passes through Kalkan — worth stopping for lunch at one of Kalkan’s rooftop restaurants before continuing.

Limanağzı (Harbour Mouth)

Type: Pebble/rock cove Access: 25-minute walk from the town centre or water taxi from harbour Entry: Free

A small cove accessible by a coastal path from the Kaş town centre — locals swim here in the late afternoon when the water has warmed in the sheltered cove. Less used than the main beaches; excellent clear water.

Peninsula boat trips: accessible coves

The Kaş Peninsula extends south into the Mediterranean, with multiple coves and small bays accessible only by boat. Day boat trips from Kaş harbour visit 3–5 of these coves:

Popular stops:

  • Baş Bük Bay: Crystal clear shallow bay; excellent snorkelling
  • Limanağzı beach and cave: Sea cave accessible by swimming
  • Mavi Mağara (Blue Grotto): Bioluminescent effect in the cave interior (best at midday when sunlight angles through the entrance)

Day boat trip: ₺250–400/person including lunch. Departs 10–10:30am; returns 5–6pm.

Private boat hire: ₺2,000–4,000/day for a small private gulet or motor boat (for groups of 6–8). Allows custom routing to the coves you prefer.

Kekova area beaches

The Üçağız lagoon area (15km east of Kaş) has several calm, protected beaches accessible from the Kekova boat trips. The lagoon water is exceptionally calm — good for families with young children, snorkelling, and kayaking over the Kekova ruins.

Simena beach: A small pebble beach near Simena castle — boat access only or via Üçağız village. Free; minimal facilities; exceptional setting.

Practical notes

Pebble vs. sand: All Kaş beaches are pebble or rock — no sandy beaches within easy reach (Kaputaş has some sand). Water shoes are useful but not essential for swimmers; they’re helpful for people who find pebble entry uncomfortable.

Water clarity: The Kaş coastline has some of the clearest water in Turkey — the combination of depth, current patterns, and limited industrial input produces 15–25m visibility even from the surface. The snorkelling here is genuinely excellent even from the town beaches.

Best swimming months: June–October. Peak water temperature (28°C) in August. The sea is swimmable through late October (24°C) in good years.

Jellyfish: Occasional presence in the open bays (July–August). The sheltered town coves (Küçük Çakıl) are less affected than the open coast.
