Rize is one of Turkey’s most unusual nomad bases — cheap, very local in character, with one of the country’s most distinctive landscapes, and without the tourist infrastructure that shapes most nomad destinations in Turkey. It suits nomads who want to be genuinely off the mainstream circuit, who are interested in the Kaçkar for extended trekking, or who want the lowest possible cost of living in a functional Turkish city.

The working infrastructure is basic. There is no coworking; the café WiFi is adequate rather than excellent; the international food options are limited. But the cost is extremely low and the environment is genuinely distinctive.

Working environment

Internet: Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Üniversitesi (RTÜ) is located in Rize and drives some café investment. City-centre cafes: 20–60 Mbps. Fixed-line fibre available in city residential buildings.

Coworking: None. Cafes only.

Mountain coverage: Turkcell 4G in Rize city; coverage degrades rapidly in the Kaçkar valleys. For working from Ayder or the Fırtına Valley, expect limited or no connection.

Visa options

90-day tourist visa: Standard.

Visa reset: Georgia (Batumi) is 2.5–3 hours east by bus — the most practical reset. ₺200–400 for the bus; Georgia is visa-free for most nationalities. A Batumi overnight resets the Turkish clock.

Ikamet: Apply at the Rize İl Göç İdaresi.

Is Rize right?

Yes if: Ultra-low cost is the priority; you want Kaçkar trekking as a central activity; you’re interested in the tea culture and Black Sea landscape; you’re comfortable in a non-tourist, very local environment.

No if: You need coworking; you want international food or a nomad community; you’re sensitive to high rainfall and grey weather (Rize is the wettest city in Turkey).
