The Kaçkar Mountains rising immediately south of the eastern Black Sea coast are one of Turkey’s premier hiking and trekking destinations — glaciated peaks reaching 3,932 metres, deep forested valleys with rushing rivers, and the extraordinary yayla system of high alpine meadows where Black Sea communities have spent summers for centuries. The contrast between the subtropical coastal vegetation (tea plantations at sea level, broadleaf forest on the lower slopes) and the alpine tundra and glaciers at the summit is one of the most dramatic vertical transitions in Turkey.

Trabzon is the access city for the northern Kaçkar. The main trekking hub is Çamlıhemşin (80km east), with the Fırtına (Storm) Valley providing access to the high trails.

The Kaçkar range

The Kaçkar (Kaçkar Dağları) is the eastern arm of the Pontik (Black Sea) mountain range — a chain of peaks between 2,000m and 3,932m running roughly east-west parallel to the Black Sea coast. The range forms the divide between the humid Black Sea climate on the north and the drier Anatolian plateau on the south.

Ecology: Three distinct ecological zones stack vertically — broadleaf forest (up to 1,200m), conifer forest (1,200–2,200m), alpine meadow/tundra (2,200–3,000m), and glaciated rock above. The biodiversity is exceptional for Turkey — the Kaçkar is a botanical hotspot with dozens of endemic plant species.

Yaylalar: The traditional Hemşin and Laz communities built summer pasture settlements (yayla) at 2,000–2,500m — clusters of stone houses used from June through September when cattle are brought up from the coastal valleys. Many are still used; some have become trekking guesthouses.

Kaçkar summit (Kaçkar Dağı, 3,932m)

The highest peak in the range — a glaciated summit requiring technical climbing skills for the direct summit routes but accessible via non-technical routes for experienced hikers.

Route: The standard approach is from the Dilberdüzü yayla (north side, via Çamlıhemşin and Elevit yayla). The route ascends through alpine meadow to the glacier base, then scrambling to the summit. Round trip from Dilberdüzü: 8–12 hours; 1,500m elevation gain.

Grade: Moderate to strenuous for the non-technical north ridge. Some snow/ice equipment may be needed on the upper sections late May–June.

Access from Trabzon: Bus to Çamlıhemşin (1.5 hours, ₺50–80); jeep taxi to Elevit yayla (1 hour, ₺150–250).

Best season: July–August for the summit. Snow lingers on north-facing aspects until late June; September brings early autumn snowfall.

The Kaçkar traverse (multi-day)

The classic Kaçkar trekking route is a 3–5 day traverse crossing the range from north (Çamlıhemşin side) to south (Yusufeli side) via the high passes.

Route: Çamlıhemşin → Hazindak yayla → Dilberdüzü yayla → Deniz Gölü (Sea Lake, 3,190m) → Kaçkar summit or bypass → Dübe yayla → Yusufeli. Approximately 60–80km; 3,000m total elevation gain.

Difficulty: Strenuous — several high passes above 3,000m; exposed terrain; alpine weather.

Season: July–September. The passes are snow-blocked until late June; October brings early storms.

Accommodation: Yayla guesthouses (pansiyon) along the route — simple but functional. ₺300–600/night including dinner and breakfast.

Guides: Not essential for the standard traverse but recommended for first-timers and for off-route exploration.

Fırtına Valley (Storm Valley)

The Fırtına River (Fırtına Çayı — Storm River) flows north through one of the Black Sea coast’s most dramatic valleys — fast-moving glacial river, dense forest, Ottoman stone bridges, and the extraordinary Zilkale (Zil Kale) castle on a clifftop above the valley.

Zilkale (Zil Kale): A ruined Byzantine-Georgian-Ottoman castle on a 400-metre cliff above the Fırtına River — spectacular setting, partially accessible for those comfortable with steep scrambling. ₺50 entry (if enforced).

Valley walk: A trail follows the river upstream from Çamlıhemşin through the forest and past the Ottoman Çifte Köprü (twin bridge) — 10–15km day walk.

White-water rafting: The Fırtına River has sections suitable for white-water rafting — organised from Çamlıhemşin operators. ₺300–500/person.

Altındere National Park (Sumela area)

The national park around the Sumela Monastery (40km south of Trabzon) has short hiking trails in the forest valley:

Sumela approach trail: The 30-minute walk from the car park through the forest to the monastery is itself through dense broadleaf forest — beech, hornbeam, and rhododendron. A longer walking approach from the valley floor (2 hours) avoids the tourist coach park.

Forest valley walks: Short trails (2–5km) through the park forest around the monastery — no elevation gain but beautiful forest walking.

Yayla visits without full trekking

The yaylalar are accessible without multi-day trekking via the mountain roads:

Ayder yayla (via Çamlıhemşin): A popular yayla village at 1,350m — spa (kaplıca, hot spring baths), guesthouses, meadow walks. ₺50–100 for kaplıca use.

Pokut yayla (above Hemşin): Traditional stone houses at 2,000m — one of the best-preserved yaylalar in the range. Accessible by jeep in summer (road may require 4WD in wet conditions).

Practical information

Best season: June–September for the high Kaçkar. July–August for the summit. The valley trails (Fırtına, Altındere) can be walked in May–October; October autumn foliage is exceptional.

Weather: The Black Sea side of the Kaçkar is one of Turkey’s wettest areas. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. Carry waterproof layers regardless of morning conditions.

Guides: The Kaçkar Dağları Rehber Association (Çamlıhemşin) provides certified mountain guides (₺500–1,000/day). Recommended for the summit and traverse; not essential for valley walks.

Accommodation on the mountain: The yayla guesthouses (pansiyon) provide simple accommodation at ₺300–600/night including meals. Some are open June–September only; book ahead in July–August.
