Fethiye is at the geographic centre of the Turquoise Coast — Marmaris lies 120km to the west; Kaş is 80km to the east; Göcek is 25km to the east across the bay. The coastal towns within day-trip range offer a substantial variety: a quiet sailing marina (Göcek), an abandoned ghost village (Kayaköy, 8km), a small upscale town with cliffside architecture (Kalkan, 65km), and the diving and Lycian town of Kaş (80km). Fethiye’s central position makes it one of the best bases for coast exploration in Turkey.

Ölüdeniz and Kayaköy (immediate vicinity)

Ölüdeniz (15km, 25 min dolmuş)

Ölüdeniz functions as Fethiye’s beach suburb — close enough to visit daily from a Fethiye base. See the full Fethiye beaches guide for Ölüdeniz detail and the Fethiye things to do for the paragliding and lagoon information.

Kayaköy ghost village (8km, 15 min dolmuş)

The abandoned Greek Orthodox village of Levissi — empty since the 1923 population exchange. One of Turkey’s most moving historic sites. Entry ₺100. See Fethiye history and Fethiye things to do for the full Kayaköy guide.

Göcek (25km east, 30 min bus)

Göcek is a small marina town set within a protected bay surrounded by forested islands — one of the most beautiful sailing areas in the eastern Mediterranean. The town itself is quiet and relatively upscale: a good fish restaurant strip, a yacht-focused marina, and a very different atmosphere from Fethiye’s busy port or Ölüdeniz’s tourist resort energy.

The Göcek islands: Twelve named islands in the surrounding bay, accessible by boat from Göcek or Fethiye. The best known: Tersane Island (Byzantine ruins at the water’s edge, sheltered swimming coves), Hamam Bay (thermal spring cave at sea level, popular with gulets), and the island coves accessible only by sea that give the area its reputation as a sailing paradise.

Day trips from Fethiye to Göcek: Take the bus to Göcek town (₺25, 30 minutes), hire a kayak or join a boat trip from Göcek marina to the islands. The boat trip from Göcek marina to the most accessible islands takes 20–30 minutes each way.

Staying in Göcek: Quieter than Fethiye; good boutique hotels and marina properties (₺1,200–4,000/night). Well-suited for sailing holidays or those wanting a calm base.

Kalkan (65km east, 1.5 hours by bus)

Kalkan is one of the most distinctive small towns on the Turquoise Coast — a whitewashed hillside town of Ottoman architecture cascading down to a small harbour, with a reputation for upscale dining and sophisticated boutique hotels. The town is genuinely beautiful in a way that hasn’t been ruined by large-scale development.

What Kalkan offers: Excellent fish restaurants in the harbour area; rooftop bars and restaurants with bay views; boutique hotels in Ottoman houses; day access to Patara beach (15km, one of Turkey’s longest sandy beaches, also a sea turtle nesting site).

Patara Beach: 18km of uninterrupted sand — Turkey’s longest beach. Protected as a turtle nesting site (access restricted at night in nesting season). Entry ₺100. The ancient city of Patara is at the beach entrance — ruins of a Roman arch, a lighthouse, and a theatre in the sand dunes. Dolmuş from Kalkan: ₺20.

Staying in Kalkan: Budget options are limited; Kalkan is primarily mid-range to upscale (₺1,500–5,000/night). It’s better as a day trip from Fethiye or as a base for the Patara and Lycian Way area.

Transport from Fethiye: Bus from Fethiye otogar to Kalkan (₺50, 1.5 hours). Buses run several times daily.

Kaş (80km east, 2 hours by bus)

Kaş is the most complete Lycian Way staging town on the Turquoise Coast — a small, genuinely charming port with excellent diving (the underwater visibility in the bay is exceptional), Lycian rock tombs directly above the town, and the island of Kekova (sunken city) within easy day-trip range.

What makes Kaş worth a stay: The combination of Lycian ruins (theatre, tombs), excellent scuba diving (15+ dive sites within 30 minutes by boat), the Kekova sunken city, the Demre/Myra church of St. Nicholas, and a town atmosphere that has retained genuine Turkish character despite significant tourist development.

Day trip from Fethiye to Kaş: Bus from Fethiye otogar (₺80, 2 hours), with 4–5 hours in Kaş before the return bus. Manageable but an overnight is better. See the full Kaş travel guide.

Transport from Fethiye: Direct bus from Fethiye otogar, 2 hours, ₺80. Several daily departures. Also accessible by gulet from Fethiye (8-10 hours; overnight if you want to arrive by sea).

Marmaris (120km west, 2.5 hours by bus)

Marmaris is the largest resort town west of Fethiye — a deep fjord-like bay with a castle, a busy harbour, and the most developed nightlife strip (Bar Street) on the Turquoise Coast. The drive or bus along the Muğla coast is scenic.

As a day trip from Fethiye: The 2.5-hour bus journey makes Marmaris a significant commitment — an overnight is more practical. See the full Marmaris travel guide.
