Fethiye Travel Guide 2026: Ölüdeniz, Lycian Way and the Blue Lagoon
Complete Fethiye travel guide — Ölüdeniz lagoon, Lycian rock tombs, the Saklikent gorge, paragliding from Babadağ, and the best beaches on Turkey's Turquoise
Guides for Fethiye
Fethiye is the gateway to the finest stretch of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast — a mid-sized port town with a busy marina, excellent food market, and Lycian rock tombs cut directly into the cliff above the town. More importantly, it’s within 15km of Ölüdeniz — arguably the most photographed beach in Turkey: a Blue Lagoon sheltered by a sand spit, with paragliders descending from Babadağ (1,969m) overhead, turquoise water in multiple gradients. The combination of accessible ancient ruins, exceptional beaches, the Lycian Way long-distance trail, and a lively port town makes Fethiye one of the strongest all-round destinations on the Turkish coast.
Key facts
- Currency: Turkish Lira (₺). Fethiye has a wider range of prices than Bodrum — budget eating is easier here.
- Best months: May, June, September, October. July–August: peak season, hot (30–35°C), very crowded at Ölüdeniz.
- Airport: Dalaman Airport (DLM), 50km east. Shuttle buses ₺100–150; taxi ₺300–450.
- Gulet base: Fethiye is the primary departure point for the “Blue Voyage” gulet route to Marmaris.
- Ölüdeniz: 15km from Fethiye town; dolmuş ₺20, 25 minutes.
Getting around
The town centre is walkable. For Ölüdeniz, Kayaköy, Saklikent, and other day trips, dolmuş minibuses (₺20–50) depart from the central dolmuş stop near the market. Taxis are available but relatively expensive (₺150–250 for Ölüdeniz). Scooter hire (₺300–500/day) is the most practical transport for independent beach exploration.
Fethiye town
The town divides between the modern marina and shopping district and the older streets behind the market hall. The Fethiye Museum (₺80, small but good) has Lycian and Carian artefacts from the surrounding region. The Amyntas Rock Tomb (₺100 entry), cut into the cliff above the town in the 4th century BCE, is one of the most impressive Lycian monuments — the Ionic-columned facade visible from throughout the harbour.
Fethiye Market: Tuesday (main market day) is one of the best market experiences on the Turquoise Coast — local produce, textiles, spices, olives. The permanent covered market (daily) has good olive oil, cheese, and dried goods.
Ölüdeniz: the Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz — a sheltered sand-spit bay where a freshwater stream meets the sea, creating extraordinary colour gradients from turquoise to deep blue — is the image that defines Fethiye for most visitors. The beach and lagoon area is a national park; entry ₺50 for the lagoon section (beach is free).
Paragliding from Babadağ: 1,969m Babadağ mountain behind Ölüdeniz is the launch point for tandem paragliding — one of the world’s best paragliding routes, landing on the Ölüdeniz beach. Dozens of operators; ₺1,200–1,800/person for a 30–45 minute flight. Book through your accommodation rather than beach touts.
Beach access: The main Ölüdeniz beach (outside the lagoon) is free; beach clubs line the main strand (sunbed ₺150–300). The lagoon section has limited sunbed access (₺200–400) and calmer water.
Ancient sites
Kayaköy (Ghost Village): An abandoned Ottoman-era Greek village, 8km from Fethiye — evacuated during the 1923 population exchanges and never reoccupied. Over 500 stone houses and two Byzantine churches, roofless and atmospheric. Entry ₺100. One of the most moving historic sites in Turkey.
Tlos: Ancient Lycian city with acropolis ruins and rock tombs, 40km from Fethiye. Entry ₺150. Combine with a swim in the Saklikent gorge.
Xanthos: The Lycian capital — ruins of the ancient city, UN-listed. 60km east. Entry ₺200.
Letoön: The sanctuary of the goddess Leto, near Xanthos. Byzantine mosaics in situ. Entry ₺200.
Saklikent Gorge
A slot canyon 45km from Fethiye where you wade through an icy river (10–15°C year-round) for 3–4km into a 300m-deep gorge. Entry ₺100; dolmuş ₺40. Full logistics in things to do in Fethiye.

Gulet tours: The 3–4 day “Blue Voyage” gulet cruise from Fethiye to Marmaris (or the reverse, or the Fethiye 12-island day tour) is one of Turkey’s most enjoyable experiences. Day tours ₺300–500/person; multi-day gulet charters ₺3,000–8,000/person for 3–4 days.
12-Island boat tour: Full-day boat trip from Fethiye harbour visiting multiple islands and bays. ₺300–450/person including lunch. Very popular; book through accommodation.
