Fethiye is one of the best bases for hiking in Turkey — specifically, for access to the Lycian Way’s most dramatic western sections. The trail from Ölüdeniz runs east along the clifftops above the Turquoise Coast, with views down to beaches and bays that are simply not visible from sea level. The easier Kayaköy-to-Ölüdeniz walk connects the ghost village to the Blue Lagoon through pine and olive forest. And the Butterfly Valley and Kabak descents offer dramatic canyons and remote beaches reachable only on foot.
The Lycian Way: western sections
The Lycian Way (Likya Yolu) runs 540km from Fethiye to Antalya, designated in 1999 by Kate Clow. The western sections are arguably the most dramatic — clifftop trails above the Mediterranean, with views that drop hundreds of metres to turquoise water below.
The Ölüdeniz to Kabak section is the classic Fethiye-area multi-day hike:
- Day 1: Ölüdeniz to Faralya via Butterfly Valley clifftop trail — 11km, 5–6 hours, strenuous (significant elevation change). Stunning clifftop section with views back to the Blue Lagoon.
- Day 2: Faralya to Kabak — 8km, 3–4 hours, moderate. The descent to Kabak beach (steep, loose rock, ropes helpful in sections) is one of the most dramatic trail sections in Turkey.
For day hikers from Fethiye: The Ölüdeniz to Butterfly Valley clifftop trail (first 5km of the above, turnaround before Faralya) is an excellent full-day hike — 10km return, 4–5 hours, moderate-strenuous.
Trail marking: Red-and-white paint blazes throughout. Occasional cairns. The trail is well-documented in Kate Clow’s guidebook (available in Fethiye bookshops and online) and on wikiloc GPX tracks.
Season: October–May is ideal. June–September is possible but hot; start before 8am to be off exposed sections before midday. July–August is the worst period for hot-weather hiking.
Kayaköy to Ölüdeniz walk
Distance: 4km one way Duration: 1.5–2 hours Elevation gain: 200m (gradual uphill, then downhill) Difficulty: Easy-moderate Start: Kayaköy village (dolmuş from Fethiye, ₺15)
The most accessible full walk in the Fethiye area — a pine and olive forest trail connecting the ghost village of Kayaköy to the Blue Lagoon. Well-marked (red-white Lycian Way blazes for part of the route; local signage throughout).
Itinerary: Take a morning dolmuş to Kayaköy (8am); explore the ghost village (1.5 hours); walk to Ölüdeniz (1.5–2 hours); spend the afternoon at the beach; return to Fethiye by dolmuş or boat.
The walk: Initially uphill through pine forest with views back to Kayaköy; then a descent through olive groves toward the Ölüdeniz plain. The Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon appears dramatically from the final ridge.
Butterfly Valley descent
Distance: 3km descent from cliff to beach Duration: 2–3 hours one way (descent); 3–4 hours return (steep ascent) Difficulty: Strenuous descent; very strenuous ascent Access: Boat from Ölüdeniz to Butterfly Valley (₺100–150 return) or trail from Faralya village (1km from the valley head, but difficult trail in sections)
The descent into Butterfly Valley from the clifftop is one of the most memorable trail sections in Turkey — a steep path with rope sections dropping 200m into the canyon. Not recommended for those uncomfortable with heights or loose-rock surfaces. The reward is the valley beach — one of the most spectacular in Turkey.
Best approach: Boat to the valley (₺100–150, multiple daily departures from Ölüdeniz). Hike out via the cliff trail to Faralya (2 hours, very strenuous); arrange a taxi from Faralya to Ölüdeniz or Fethiye (₺120–150).
Kabak descent
Distance: 3km descent from the road to the beach Duration: 45–60 minutes descent; 1–1.5 hours ascent Difficulty: Steep and strenuous (1,000m total elevation change in the valley system) Access: Dolmuş from Fethiye to Faralya junction (₺40, 1 hour), then taxi or walk to Kabak village (4km)
The descent from Kabak village to Kabak beach — through pine and maquis forest on a rough track — is steep but short. The beach itself (pebble, backed by pine trees, very remote) justifies the effort.
Overnight option: The small eco-camps on the Kabak hillside (₺400–900/night including dinner) are the best way to experience the valley — arrive in the afternoon, sleep in a tree-house bungalow, walk to the beach in the morning before the day-trippers arrive.
Saklikent Gorge walk
Distance: 3–4km into the gorge Duration: 2–3 hours return Difficulty: Easy (flat, wading) Entry: ₺100 Access: Dolmuş from Fethiye, ₺40 (50 minutes)
Not technically a mountain hike but one of the best walking experiences near Fethiye — a slot canyon with 10–15°C cold river water that you wade through. The contrast with summer heat outside (35°C+) is extraordinary. Wear sandals that can get wet; the river is ankle-to-knee depth for most of the accessible section.
