Things to do here

The top-rated tours and activities here — all with instant confirmation and free cancellation on most bookings.

Fethiye’s attractions extend well beyond the famous Blue Lagoon — though Ölüdeniz justifiably dominates. Within 1 hour of the town centre: an abandoned Greek village (Kayaköy), a deep slot canyon (Saklikent), multiple Lycian ancient cities (Tlos, Xanthos, Letoön), and the western trailhead of the Lycian Way. Add the boat trips from the harbour, the rock tombs above the town, and the Tuesday market, and Fethiye has more per-day options than most Turkish coastal towns.

Ölüdeniz and the Blue Lagoon

Entry: ₺50 for the lagoon section; beach section free Distance: 15km from Fethiye; dolmuş ₺20 (25 minutes)

The Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz is Turkey’s most photographed beach site — a sheltered sand-spit bay with extraordinary colour gradients. The lagoon’s combination of freshwater stream input and protected bay creates the signature turquoise-to-deep-blue effect that makes the photographs look processed even when they’re not.

Logistics: The main beach (outside the lagoon spit) is free. The lagoon section (inside the sand spit) is a national park with a ₺50 entry fee. Sunbeds on the main beach: ₺150–300. The lagoon section has calmer water — better for small children, swimmers, and photography.

Crowds: July–August brings extraordinary numbers — arrive by 9am for a good position. May, June, September, and October are significantly more pleasant; the water is still warm (24–26°C in October) and the crowds thin dramatically.

Paragliding from Babadağ

Price: ₺1,200–1,800/person (tandem with instructor) Duration: 30–45 minutes in the air Height: Launch from 1,969m; landing on Ölüdeniz beach

Babadağ mountain is one of the world’s best paragliding sites — the thermal conditions, the height, the landing beach, and the views (the Blue Lagoon from above is extraordinary) make this a consistently top-ranked experience. Dozens of operators offer tandem flights; pick up from accommodation in Ölüdeniz or Fethiye is standard.

Operator selection: Choose a licensed operator with DHMI approval. Your accommodation should be able to refer a reliable one. Avoid beach-tout booking; price differences between operators are small (₺100–200) while quality differences are significant.

Best time: Morning flights (8–10am) have the best conditions and fewer queues.

Kayaköy (Ghost Village)

Entry: ₺100 Distance: 8km from Fethiye; dolmuş ₺15 (15 minutes) Time needed: 1.5–2.5 hours

One of the most moving historic sites in Turkey — an entire Greek Orthodox village abandoned during the 1923 population exchanges and never reoccupied. Over 500 stone houses, two Byzantine churches (with fragmentary frescoes), a school, and a mosque-converted building cover the hillside. Roofless since 1923; the stone shells are stable and explorable.

The village’s abandonment is a physical record of one of the most significant demographic events in modern Turkish history — when Turkey and Greece exchanged Muslim and Orthodox Christian populations, Kayaköy’s Greek community went to Greece and their Turkish counterparts came here. Neither the incoming population nor subsequent Turkish administrations ever chose to settle the ghost village.

Combine with: The Kayaköy to Ölüdeniz walking trail (4km, 1.5 hours) — see Fethiye hiking for the full route guide.

Saklikent Gorge

Entry: ₺100 Distance: 45km from Fethiye; dolmuş ₺40 (50 minutes)

Turkey’s second-longest gorge — 18km long, up to 300m deep, with an icy river running through it. You wade in from a wooden platform; the gorge stays 10–15°C even in August, which is itself a reason to visit in summer heat. Restaurants at the entrance serve trout over the river (₺150–250). For full logistics and what to wear, see Fethiye hiking.

Lycian rock tombs above Fethiye

Entry: ₺100 (Amyntas Tomb area) Location: Hillside above the town centre, 10-minute walk

The Amyntas Rock Tomb (4th century BCE) — an Ionic-columned facade cut directly into the limestone cliff — is one of the most visually impressive Lycian monuments. It faces west, catching the afternoon light beautifully. The surrounding hillside has several smaller tomb chambers.

The tombs are visible from throughout the Fethiye harbour area; seeing them illuminated at sunset from the town is one of the most atmospheric Fethiye experiences.

Day trips to Lycian sites

Tlos (40km, 1 hour by dolmuş + taxi): Ancient Lycian city with acropolis, rock tombs, Roman baths, and a stadium. Entry ₺150. Combine with Saklikent gorge (nearby) for a full day.

Xanthos (60km, 1.5 hours): The Lycian capital — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Harpy Tomb, the Xanthian Obelisk, and a Roman theatre. The most politically significant Lycian city. Entry ₺200.

Letoön (65km, 1.5 hours): The sanctuary of Leto (mother of Apollo and Artemis), 4km from Xanthos — a UNESCO World Heritage Site jointly with Xanthos. Byzantine-era mosaics partially in situ in the pool. Entry ₺200.

Practical: Both Xanthos and Letoön are accessible by dolmuş from Fethiye via Kınık (₺50); combine both sites in a single day. Hire a car for flexibility.

Fethiye Museum

Entry: ₺80 Hours: Daily 9am–5pm (closed Monday in winter) Location: Town centre, 5 minutes from the marina

A small but well-presented archaeological museum with Lycian, Carian, and Byzantine finds from the surrounding sites. The Trilingual Stele (an inscription in Greek, Lycian, and Aramaic from Letoön, dating to the 4th century BCE) is the most significant object and one of the key sources for deciphering the Lycian language.

Boat trips from Fethiye harbour

12-Island day tour: ₺300–450/person including lunch. Full-day tour visiting multiple islands and secluded bays. Departs 9–10am, returns 5–6pm. Very popular; book 1–2 days in advance in peak season.

Blue Voyage gulet cruise: The 3–4 day gulet cruise from Fethiye to Göcek, Bozburun, and Marmaris (or reverse) is one of Turkey’s classic boat experiences. Shared gulet berth: ₺2,500–4,000/person. Private gulet charter: ₺15,000–30,000 for the whole boat.

What to avoid

The Ölüdeniz beach clubs directly adjacent to the paragliding landing zone have the highest prices on the beach (₺300–500 for sunbed access) without being the best quality — they charge the tourist premium for the most in-demand location. Walk 5 minutes along the beach for equivalent facilities at lower prices.
