İzmir is one of Turkey’s most liveable cities partly because of its transport. The İZBAN suburban rail runs north to south along the coast and connects to the metro; the bay ferries give a faster and more pleasant alternative to road traffic for crossing to the northern shore; and the city centre is compact enough that many errands are walkable. For visitors, the network is easy to navigate once you understand its structure.
Overview: How İzmir’s Transport Fits Together
İzmir’s public transport has four main layers:
- İZBAN — the main suburban rail backbone, running 130 km from Aliağa in the north to Cumaovası/Selçuk in the south, stopping at key city stations including Basmane, Alsancak and Halkapınar
- Metro (M1) — the underground rail line connecting Fahrettin Altay in the southwest to Evka 3 in the northeast, with key stops including Konak, Basmane and Bornova
- Bay ferries — crossing between Konak (city centre) and Karşıyaka on the north shore, and between Alsancak/Pasaport piers and Bostanlı
- ESHOT buses — the city’s bus network, covering neighbourhoods not served by rail
For visitors based in Alsancak or the Kordon area, the İZBAN gets you to and from the airport and gives access to beach towns and Selçuk (Ephesus) without a car. The ferry is the most enjoyable way to cross the bay.
İZBAN Suburban Rail
İZBAN (İzmir Banliyö Tren Ağı) is the suburban rail network shared between Turkish State Railways (TCDD) and İzmir’s transit authority. It’s the backbone of long-distance city travel and the most efficient way to get to the airport and south-coast destinations.
Key Stations and Lines
İZBAN operates three overlapping lines, all sharing the central urban segment:

Fares (as of 2026): A single ride with an İzmir Card costs approximately ₺30–50 depending on distance. Pay-as-you-go single tickets from machines are approximately 20–30% more expensive. From central İzmir to the airport (7–8 zones): approximately ₺45–65. From central İzmir to Selçuk: approximately ₺60–90.
Frequency: Peak-hour trains (07:00–09:00 and 17:00–19:30) run every 10–15 minutes on the main central segment. Off-peak, every 20–30 minutes. Services run from approximately 05:30 to midnight.
Metro (Line M1)
İzmir’s metro (Line M1) runs 20 km underground and overground from Fahrettin Altay in the southwest to Evka 3 in the northeast. It intersects with İZBAN at Halkapınar station (interchange without barrier, same İzmir Card works for both).
Key stops for visitors:
- Fahrettin Altay — southwestern terminus; ferry connections nearby
- Konak — the main city square; ferry pier, Kordon walking distance (15 min), Kemeraltı bazaar entry
- Basmane — connects to İZBAN, historic district, bus station
- Hilal — residential south
- Evka 3 — northeastern terminus
Fares: Same İzmir Card as İZBAN. Single ride: approximately ₺25–40 as of 2026. The metro is fast between Konak and Basmane (3 minutes) and useful for reaching Bornova (university district) or moving between central transit hubs without getting caught in road traffic.
Hours: Approximately 06:00–00:00, with trains every 5–8 minutes at peak and every 10–12 minutes off-peak.
Trams
İzmir has two tram routes:
Çiğli Tramway: A light rail line running north through the Çiğli district from Halkapınar, connecting to İZBAN. Primarily serves residential commuters. For visitors, this is mainly useful if staying in northern İzmir.
Konak Tramway (historical): A short heritage tram route running along the Kordon waterfront in the city centre — more of a tourist curiosity than a serious transport option. It covers about 2 km along the waterfront promenade. Fare approximately ₺5–10 as of 2026. A pleasant experience if you’re walking the Kordon anyway.
Bay Ferries
The ferries crossing İzmir Bay are a genuine highlight of the city’s transport network — practical for commuters heading to Karşıyaka and Bostanlı, and an excellent short voyage with views of the bay, the Kordon, and the hills behind the city.
Routes and Operators
İzmir’s ferry network is operated by İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi (İzmir Metropolitan Municipality) under the İzdeniz brand.
Konak → Karşıyaka: The busiest route. Ferries leave Konak pier every 15–20 minutes during the day (approximately 07:00–22:00), reducing to every 30–40 minutes in the evening. Journey time approximately 15–20 minutes. Fare: approximately ₺20–30 as of 2026 with an İzmir Card.
Pasaport → Bostanlı: A longer crossing (20–25 minutes) to the northeastern shore. Less frequent — check the İzdeniz timetable for current departures. Fare approximately ₺25–40 as of 2026.
Alsancak pier connections: Some services also depart from the Alsancak ferry pier, useful if staying in that district.
Tip: Ferries get crowded during the evening rush (17:00–19:00). The return trip from Karşıyaka on a weekday evening can mean standing room only. Travel slightly outside peak hours if you want a seat on the upper deck.
Why Take the Ferry?
The 15-minute crossing from Konak to Karşıyaka costs roughly the same as a bus ride but crosses one of the world’s great city bays. Karşıyaka itself is a residential neighbourhood with excellent lokanta-style restaurants, good cafés, and almost no tourist presence. The ferry is the recommended approach for an afternoon in Karşıyaka followed by dinner before the return crossing.
ESHOT Buses
İzmir’s ESHOT (Eşrefpaşa Havagazı ve Otobüs Taşımacılığı) network runs roughly 300 bus routes covering the entire city. For visitors, ESHOT is most useful for reaching neighbourhoods not served by rail or ferry — the Karabağlar district, Buca, Karşıyaka’s inland areas.
Fares: Approximately ₺20–35 per ride with İzmir Card (2026). Cash fares slightly higher. The İzmir Card works on all ESHOT routes.
Navigation: The ESHOT mobile app (iOS and Android) and Google Maps both show real-time bus positions and route planning in İzmir. Route numbers are posted at shelters; the digital boards at major stops show next departure times.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
İzmir’s taxis are metered and plentiful throughout the centre. Taxis are yellow with an illuminated taksi sign. The starting flag-fall rate is approximately ₺30–40 as of 2026; a ride within central İzmir (Alsancak to Basmane, for example) runs ₺80–150. Always confirm the meter is running at the start of the trip.
BiTaksi: The dominant Turkish taxi app (similar to Uber’s model). Shows available licensed taxis nearby, provides an upfront fare estimate, and allows payment by card. Widely used in İzmir and reliable. Download before arrival.
Uber: Uber operates in İzmir as Uber Taxi (licensed taxi drivers). Functionally similar to BiTaksi — useful for visitors who already have the app. Note that surge pricing applies at busy times.

Getting To and From Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB)
İzmir’s Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) is 18 km south of the city centre, connected directly by İZBAN.
By İZBAN: Board from Alsancak or Basmane (or any central station) on any of the three lines — all stop at the airport station. Journey time 30–40 minutes from the city centre. Fare approximately ₺45–65 as of 2026 with an İzmir Card. The İZBAN station is inside the airport terminal building; the connection is weather-protected and barrier-free with İzmir Card.
By taxi: Approximately ₺400–600 from the Kordon or Alsancak, as of 2026. Road journey 25–35 minutes outside of peak hours; up to 50–60 minutes in morning rush traffic. App taxis (BiTaksi, Uber Taxi) available from the airport rank.
By bus: ESHOT bus 320 connects the airport to Konak, but takes significantly longer than İZBAN and requires navigating stops. The İZBAN is strongly preferable unless you’re heading to a neighbourhood not served by rail.
İzmir Card (İzmirim Kart)
For any stay longer than a day or two, an İzmir Card is worth buying. It works on all public transport modes — İZBAN, metro, tram, ESHOT buses, and bay ferries — and gives a discount of approximately 20–30% versus single-fare tickets.
Where to buy: Kiosks at Alsancak, Basmane, Konak and Halkapınar İZBAN stations, and at ferry terminals. A blank card costs approximately ₺30–50 as of 2026. Load as much credit as you need (multiples of ₺50 is practical for a 3-day stay).
