Rize’s hiking is essentially the northern Kaçkar — the same range accessed from Trabzon but from a different entry point. The Fırtına Valley (shared with Trabzon prefecture) provides the main access route for the central and western Kaçkar; the Hemşin valleys above Rize give access to different sections of the high range.

The shared Kaçkar hiking information with Trabzon is detailed in hiking near Trabzon. This page focuses on the specifically Rize-accessible routes.

Ayder yayla area walks

Ayder (1,350m) is the most accessible mountain base above Rize — reached by bus to Çamlıhemşin and then dolmuş.

Ayder meadow walks: Short trails from the village across the alpine meadow — 2–5km circuits through flowers (rhododendrons in May–June, wildflowers through August), with views of the surrounding Kaçkar ridges.

Duration: 1–3 hours for the meadow circuits.

Difficulty: Easy — flat to gently sloping meadow paths.

Şenyuva to Ayder trail: A forest trail climbing from the lower valley (Şenyuva village) to Ayder — 8–10km, 600m elevation gain, 3–4 hours. The forest (beech, chestnut, maple) is dense and the trail passes waterfalls.

Pokut yayla (above Hemşin)

Pokut is one of the best-preserved traditional yaylalar in the Kaçkar range — a cluster of Hemşin stone houses at approximately 2,000m, accessible by a 4WD road or a 4–6 hour hike from the valley.

Character: Traditional stone architecture; mountain views in multiple directions; wildflowers in June–July; the sense of a living traditional landscape rather than a tourist reconstruction.

Access: Jeep from Çamlıhemşin (1 hour; requires 4WD in wet conditions); or 2-day hike from the valley.

Verçenik (3,709m)

Verçenik is the second-highest peak in the Kaçkar range — accessible from the Hemşin valleys above Rize via a 2–3 day route passing through several yaylalar.

Route: Çamlıhemşin → Elevit yayla → Yaylalar yayla → Verçenik summit → return. 3 days; approximately 45km; 2,000m total elevation gain.

Difficulty: Strenuous — some snow/ice on the upper sections May–June.

Best season: July–August for snow-free summit conditions.

Glacier lakes (Deniz Gölü and surrounds)

The high Kaçkar plateau contains several glacial lakes — Deniz Gölü (Sea Lake, 3,190m) is the most famous, accessed via the Kaçkar summit approach route.

Day hike to a lower glacial lake: Several glacial lakes at 2,500–2,800m are accessible as long day hikes from the high yaylalar (Elevit, Hazindak). 10–16km; 700–1,000m gain; 6–8 hours.

Rhododendron season

The eastern Black Sea slopes have extraordinary rhododendron coverage — the flowering season (late May to early July, depending on altitude) turns the hillsides pink and white. The combination of rhododendron-covered mountains and the lush forest is one of the most distinctive landscape experiences in Turkey.

Best altitude for rhododendrons: 1,200–2,000m; June is the peak month.

Best locations: The approach to Ayder; the Pokut yayla area; any trail through the forest zone during June.

Practical information

Best season: June–September for the high routes; May and October for the lower forest trails. The rhododendron season (June) is the most spectacular time.

Weather: The northern Kaçkar is very wet — carry waterproofs regardless of morning conditions. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.

Guides: Recommended for the high routes; the Kaçkar Dağları Rehber Association operates from Çamlıhemşin.

Ayder kaplıca: After any hike above Ayder, the hot spring baths (₺50–100) are the appropriate recovery. The combination of a strenuous mountain day and a sulphur bath is the standard Ayder pattern.
